Corneal Transplant

When we talk about eye transplants we are actually talking about corneal transplants. Cornea is that part of the eye on which we wear our contact lenses. There are certain condition which make the ideally transparent cornea opaque. Once this happens the vision in that eye drops and it is then that we may need to perform a corneal transplant. A corneal transplant is one of the most successful transplant procedures in the human body. This is because the cornea has no chance of rejection since blood – often the cause of organ rejection after transplant – is not present. Here the procedure takes about 45 min to 1 hour if all goes according to plan. You would be expected to put eye drops for periods ranging from a few months to a year. If during followup we find specific signs of graft rejection then we may start you on additional eye drops to prevent the failure of the surgery.
